Too often, the education we give to children is one that leaves them with more questions than answers. Most children learn a very one-dimensional and sanitized view of the world – where the pilgrims and the Native Americans all got along, where the founding fathers never told a lie, where MLK Jr.’s “I Have A Dream” speech ended racism, etc. Children are taught to read, but they aren’t taught to question what they read, only to memorize enough information to pass the test.
In the classroom, many educators are too worried about going viral to even think about discussing subjects and histories that may be perceived as “controversial” or “political.” Issues that directly impact our kids and their quality of life, real and important issues like racism, sexism, mental illness, wealth inequality, government corruption, etc. – get pushed aside. And so our kids grow up in a world filled with confusion and problems without the vocabulary to describe the root causes behind those problems, and with no tools or templates to help solve them.
Our kids deserve better. They deserve a liberatory education that prepares and empowers them to not only understand the world, but to become agents of change in their world. We as adults have a responsibility to help them along the way. But where do we start?
Hola, queridos! Soy Leslie Priscilla. I’m a first-generation non-black Chicana mother to three bicultural children. I’m a descendant of Indigenous Tarahumara Rarámuri and Spanish lineages, and I’ve resided on occupied Tongva and Acjachemen land, a.k.a Orange County, CA, all my life.
I’ve been working with children, caregivers, and familias for over 14 years, both as a teacher and through work with various mental health organizations throughout Orange County. But now I share my medicine with you all through Latinx Parenting, the bilingual organization I founded.
Latinx Parenting is rooted in children’s rights, social & racial justice, and antiracism, and offers family education and support that is trauma-informed, healing-centered, amplifying of our strengths, advocacy, and culturally sustaining of and for the Latinx community and its allies.
Through curated and passionate content, workshops, and courses, Latinx Parenting supports parents, caregivers, and former Latinx children to heal their lineages, raise thriving future ancestors, and create more connection with themselves, their children, and their cultura. My belief is that through this work we can leave a legacy of thriving for our gente. I’m so happy that you’re with us on this journey!
This workshop is designed for parents, caregivers, educators, and anyone who wants to equip children with the tools to think critically about the world around them. Whether you’re a teacher looking to introduce deeper discussions in your classroom or a parent wondering how to have meaningful conversations with your child, this workshop provides practical guidance and resources.
The concepts in this workshop are adaptable for children of all ages. We will discuss strategies for engaging young children with foundational critical thinking skills, as well as how to introduce complex topics to older kids and teens in a way that is age-appropriate and thought-provoking.
Rather than focusing on specific issues, this workshop is about equipping adults with the tools and strategies to engage children in open, analytical discussions on a variety of topics. However, we will explore examples of how to introduce themes like history, media literacy, and social justice in a way that encourages curiosity and critical thinking.
Yes! You don’t need to be an educator to benefit from this workshop. Parents, caregivers, mentors, and anyone who interacts with children will find valuable strategies to help young minds question, analyze, and understand the world in a deeper way.
That’s completely normal, and part of what we address in this workshop. You don’t need to have all the answers—sometimes, the best response is to explore the question together. We’ll discuss how to navigate tough conversations and encourage children to seek knowledge rather than just accept information at face value.
